We then made our own and ate them. YUM!!!!

The final day was the best because we got to play games and have fun!

SYMMETRY

Last week in maths we investigated Symmetry. First we folded paper in half and cut out shapes and when we opened up the shapes the designs were symmetrical. Next we worked with a partner to create a shape using 2 rectangles and 2 triangles. We then pasted all our shapes on and looked to see if any of the shapes were the same. We found out that some shapes were the same but just transformed either by flipping, turning or sliding the shape. Today we used the same triangle shape but tried flipping, sliding and turning the shape to create a different position for our shape.

She then gave us a number and we had to try to make as many different equal groups. We then had to write the sum. That was hard because sometimes we couldn't make equal groups. Today we were allowed to make our own sum. Ashley made 2 groups of 10 and she worked out it equalled 20.

The chickens may have gone but the week was still really busy. In reading we have been making connections with the books we have been reading. We really enjoyed the book Our Granny because we could make lots of connections with our own grannies. In writing we have started to use Retrieval Charts to collect information to write Reports. Of course the first Report we are going to write is on Chickens. We now know lots about them!!! In maths we have been working on Repeated Addition and have done some great open ended activities. This week we made up lolly bags for a party and had to make sure everyone had the same amount of lollies in their bags. Mrs. Wynde even brought in real lollies and we had them for a treat! We called that activity "Yummy Maths." In the afternoon we have started a Chicken Project. We are going to do 3 activities. One group is creating a Photostory on the computer about our chickens, the other is making a collage of a chicken environment and the 3rd group are creating a Life Cycle of the Chicken.

FUN with CHICKENS

What a great week we have had. The chickens gave us lots of pleasure as we weighed them, measured them, built henhouses for them, made birth certificates for them and gave them names. The chickens loved having a play on the floor and this morning we put our henhouses down and put seed in them and watched them go into the houses. Jai and Campbell's house was a favourite of the chickens.

STUDENT of the WEEK

This week Campbell is our Student of the week. He has been a great helper with the chickens and the caterpillars. He is always willing to assist me with cleaning out the brooder or finding the escaping caterpillars.

ALL HATCHED

What an exciting week we have had! On Monday the eggs arrived. By Wednesday afternoon one had a crack in it. When we arrived on Thursday, 3 chickens had already hatched out. During the day another 6 hatched and we were able to see some of them hatching. We kept running up to the incubator to see them coming out. Mrs. Wynde changed 4 into the brooder on Thursday afternoon to free up some space in the incubator. There were only another 4 to hatch. When we arrived Friday morning all of them were out. We had a play with 4 of them on the floor. There were plenty of brothers and sisters, and teachers coming to see our chicks. They are all nice and fluffy.

EGGS HAVE ARRIVED

After waiting patiently all day the eggs arrived at 3:20pm, just as we were leaving. There are 13 eggs and we have numbered them. They are in an incubator and we have to keep the temperature at between 35-38 degrees. There is a container of water in the incubator to keep the air humid. This helps the eggs to hatch. We are observing the eggs and watching for any sign of movement. At the moment we have seen number 12 and 2 shake and we think number 13 may have moved. We are all very excited.

Royal Melbourne Zoo

All of the children wrote Recounts of their time at the zoo. Here are some of their stories.

On Thursday the grade 1’s went to the Royal Melbourne Zoo. We went to the Discovery Room to learn the life cycles of animals. I learnt in the discovery room that stick insects drop their eggs into the sand and the ants take the eggs underground and leave them for a few days and then the egg hatches and they look like bull ants. I enjoyed most the reptiles.
Ryan

On Thursday our class went to the Melbourne zoo. First we saw the seals. After that we saw a stingray. Next we saw Mali. Finally we had some of our lunch. I learnt that frog’s eyes go down into their throat to help them eat. I enjoyed the orangutans. They were playing. I had a fantastic day and it was a fun day.
Shyla

On Thursday I went to the zoo. It was fun. I went with the grade 1’s. I went because we were studying life cycles. We went to the butterfly house and we also saw the elephants. I got to see Mali. I learnt about a butterfly cycle. A butterfly came on me because a girl put it on me. It was hot in the butterfly house. I saw the giraffes too. The seals were cute. When we were there I saw my friend Laura. Do you love the zoo? Because I do.
Sarah

On Thursday we went to the zoo. I went with the grade and we saw the butterfly house. I learnt that butterflies don’t make a cocoon. It makes a pupa. I enjoyed the giraffes and the zebras were in with the giraffes.
